We’re working on a much more detailed seed-sowing guide. In the meantime, here’s some information about a few seeds we like to save seeds of year after year. We’ll add to this as time allows.

Luffa
Luffa is an annual vining plant that loves the heat and sun and needs a long growing season. Direct sow outdoors as early as possible in the spring. The timeline varies a bit every year, but early March is usually good. If starting indoors, sow in cells 2-4 weeks early, harden off, and transplant carefully.
Fennel
Direct sow outdoors in fall (Sept–Nov) or early spring (Feb–Mar). If starting indoors, sow in cells 4-6 weeks prior to transplant. Sow a few seeds per cell, ¼” deep.

Starting Seeds Indoors
You can buy a bagged mix that’s intended for seed-starting or make your own. If making your own, some ingredients to consider including: peat moss and/or coconut coir (for moisture retention), perlite or vermiculite (for drainage and aeration), sifted compost, worm castings.
