Ruta graveolens

Plant family: Rutaceae

Rue in the Garden Ecosystem

Rue is an evergreen perennial shrub with aromatic silvery green foliage and pretty yellow flower clusters that bloom nearly all throughout the year. The plant grows to be about 2-3 feet tall and wide, grows well in full sun, and is drought-tolerant once established. We love this plant, and in our experience, it's constantly covered in a myriad of pollinators. It's also a swallowtail butterfly host plant.

Working with Rue

Energetically, rue is often thought to provide spiritual protection and ward of bad energy. It has a long history of use in ceremony and can provide support to those who feel stuck and need help dispelling negativity. We love planting it at the entrance of all our gardens, as it's such a vibrant and powerful presence.

We love growing rue and often have rue plants for sale in Central Texas, depending on the season. Here's how to order plants from us.
